The 2007 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award given by Iowa Governor Chet Culver and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recognizes Pella for its leadership in waste management by recycling wood generated in manufacturing Pella windows and doors, rather than incinerating it or sending it to the landfill.
"Our commitment to environmental stewardship is firmly rooted in our culture, just as it has been since our company was founded in 1925," Corporate Environmental Manager Jim Nieboer said. "Pella Corporation is honored to be recognized for our voluntary efforts in using and recycling resources—like wood—responsibly."
Continuous improvement leads to increased recycling, reduced waste to landfill
- Modified recycling processes and material segregation on assembly lines lead to more scrap wood available to be recycled into wood flour, landscape mulch and livestock bedding.
- Increased recycling efficiencies reduce tonnage sent to the landfill by as much as 175 tons per month.
