Competencies

Competencies Overview
Career Development is the culmination of excellent job performance enabled by Professional Development, and driven by the individual's long-term, manager-supported goals.

Professional Competencies
If you are an individual contributor, Professional Competencies apply to you. You will spend the majority of your development time on basic individual abilities. Some portion of your development time will be spent learning about the business and about your function or team. And finally, since leadership is a key component of success, we expect you to develop leadership skills, too.

Examples: Dale Carnegie, Interaction Skills for Success, Computer skills classes

Core Leader Competencies
If you manage others, your development time evolves from the Core Leader Competencies. This means the time you spend developing your own individual skills and your functional skills will probably be less, which coincides with a lesser need. On the other hand, the need for you to demonstrate leadership skills is even greater than before, so more time will be spent there.

Examples: Manager Basics, Human Resource Guideline Sessions, Core Skills for Building Commitment

Key Leader Competencies
Performing at the Advanced or Senior level requires the use of Key Leader Competencies. Once again, learning new individual and functional skills are probably less critical, and that time is replaced by even more focus on improving your ability to develop others and demonstrate leadership skills.

Examples: Leveraging Diversity, Trust - Strengthening the Foundation, Executive Leadership Development Program
